Katie Smith is a typical twenty-something lady. Actually, if you think about it, this is a pretty common occurrence. Doctors were perplexed when Ms. Smith was only 24 years old when something strange started to grow from within her.
Katie’s stomach ballooned to the point where she did appear to be pregnant! The weird part was that she’s not even pregnant. Despite the fact that every pregnancy test she took came back negative, her doctors proceeded to dismiss her alarming concerns.
Smith is a 28-year-old Welshman from Swansea. She gained a lot of weight in 2014, but within a few years, she looked like she was nine months pregnant. She told the BBC that she was never thin, but that she grew a stomach like this over time.
Katie led a healthy lifestyle and was conscious of her appearance. She was proud of her curves and spent a lot of time in the gym to maintain them. This is why her gradual weight gain irritated me so much. Regrettably, the mystery remains unsolved.
Not As It Seems
Katie’s biggest concern at the time was whether she would be able to attend the work Christmas party because she was self-conscious about her attire. Katie felt she wasn’t thin enough at the time.
Too Fast To Keep Up With
Katie tried everything to stop her stomach from growing. As she said ” “I was exercising and eating healthily, but I was slowly getting bigger. Nothing is more frustrating than leading a healthy lifestyle but gaining too much weight.
What Was Going On?
She continued, “It crept up so slowly [that] I didn’t know anything was wrong – I thought I was putting on timber.” Regardless of how much she exercised or followed a strict diet, she continued to gain a significant amount of weight.
Not Just Growing
She couldn’t ignore her rapid weight gain any longer. She began to notice that all of her weight gains were going straight to her stomach, and it also felt different. How would she go about it?
Her stomach began to feel hard and swollen to the touch. Nevertheless, she remained optimistic and hoped that this would pass with time, but some things don’t always work out the way we want.
There’s Only One Explanation
Her dress grew in size quickly, and she was now a size eight. She was still hesitant about seeking medical attention. She grew up with a doctor for a father, which made her apprehensive.
Her Gut Feeling
She had no idea that bigger problems were on the way. Katie could only think of one explanation at this point. However, she wasn’t sure she wanted to believe it. What did she believe it was?
After considering all of the factors, Katie concluded that there was only one possible explanation: pregnancy. Her belly was growing, and she was gaining weight; she was always tired and had a serious boyfriend.
Everything pointed to a bun in the oven when all the factors were considered. Katie and her boyfriend were both concerned about this possibility. If she was pregnant, it was most likely unintended. Given her circumstances, however, this was a possibility.
Soon To Be Parents
Katie and her boyfriend Jamie Gibbons had been dating for ten years and had considered the possibility that she was expecting a child. They knew they had to at least check, even if they weren’t ready for it.
The Blue Stripe
The couple was both surprised when the pregnancy test came back negative. They assumed the first test was incorrect, so she took a second one right away. However, it only yielded the same result!
Getting Really Worried
They were taken aback and decided to visit a doctor. What was going on here, exactly? Was she unwell? Is she pregnant, or has she had a miscarriage? A slew of dreadful scenarios flashed through her mind, terrifying her.
Facing Her Fears
Katie’s options had run out, and it was time to see a doctor. Unfortunately, she did not receive the response she had hoped for or expected. She was basically told that she was “merely fat” by the doctor. She couldn’t see any way out at this point.
Following Her Instincts
Katie sensed something was wrong, even though the doctors dismissed her concerns. She ignored it, however, because it had no bearing on her daily routine. She was still baffled as to what was going on.
She couldn’t stop thinking about why she wasn’t expecting a baby. What was the deal with her appearing to be pregnant? She did not have complete trust in the doctors’ opinions. But, because they were professionals, she should be able to put her trust in them, right?
If she were pregnant, the problem would go away once the baby was born. Her stomach, unfortunately, continued to grow for another two years. Every month, it grew bigger and bigger until something terrible happened at work.
She Didn’t Feel Well
Up to this point, her day had been fairly ordinary, but when she suddenly felt dizzy and nauseous, her day changed dramatically. That’s when she passed out. Her coworkers told her that she had fainted.
A Difficult Period
Katie realized she needed to see a doctor right away after this. She said, “It was a tough period in work, and when I passed out, my GP put it down to stress.” She didn’t have any other options and had no choice but to carry on with her life as she had been.
All From Stress?
Is it possible to pass out as a result of being overly stressed? Katie, on the other hand, was not convinced. On the other hand, her doctor tried to reassure her that nothing was wrong and that she wasn’t pregnant.
Not What It Appears
Unwanted questions about her “pregnancy” were impossible to avoid. People couldn’t help but notice her expanding belly, which she couldn’t deny. She had to explain herself over and over again.
No End In Sight
Katie always answered with the same response day in and day out, ” The doctors say I am just overweight.” Even though she was annoyed by the situation, she had no idea when the suffering would ever end.
People kept asking her when the baby was due, and she eventually started lying to spare them the embarrassment. Instead, she told them she was overweight because she believed it.
Katie began to feel self-conscious about her appearance as she waddled around with a huge belly. She even started shopping in the maternity section because she couldn’t find anything that fit her.
She said, “I remember trying to shop for clothes in December 2016, and nothing would fit. I was skin and bone on top, then this massive lump and normal legs. The only thing that was going to fit was maternity wear.”
Katie was against the idea of getting help from anyone else. After several incidents at work caused by a lack of sleep and large fluctuations in weight, she went to a doctor for help.
And none of this would have happened if her coworkers hadn’t insisted on her being checked out. Many people are perplexed as to why Katie did not take better care of herself. Why was it taking her so long to seek help when something was clearly wrong?
A New Explanation
Katie was going about her business, attempting to avoid her predicament. But when she passed out four times, it was enough! The doctor this time blamed her exhaustion on her acne medication, but she refused to accept this explanation.
Time To Stand Up
The doctors didn’t seem to be taking her symptoms or situation seriously. They continued to place blame on other factors and events in Katie’s life. She decided that it was past time to put her foot down.
Enough Was Enough
She had been off it for several months and insisted that there had to be another reason. She went to a second doctor, who confirmed that she was indeed pregnant. He took numerous blood tests, all of which came back negative.
Getting To The Bottom Of It
Regardless of the blood test results or further examination, her GP concluded that pregnancy was the only explanation. As a result, he requested a second ultrasound. Katie was having trouble breathing, and even walking was difficult for her at this point.
The Truth At Last
She was seen by a doctor who requested that they check her for pregnancy right away. Was she going to figure out what was going on finally? It did, however, open a whole new can of worms for her, which she had not anticipated.
Katie kept an eye on the doctor as she performed the ultrasound. Something was clearly wrong when she saw her expression. Her eyes were dilated, and she had a fearful expression on her face.
Katie became paralyzed after the doctor requested a consultant. Jamie, her boyfriend, tried to console her, but the panic she was experiencing at the time was impossible to overcome. What was going on inside her stomach, exactly?
The ultrasound screen was blank, indicating that Katie was not expecting a child. Something, however, was still going on in her stomach. They only knew for sure that her life was in grave danger.
The possibilities were limitless, but they needed a CT to figure it out. Katie was understandably terrified and concerned about what was about to happen. Her thoughts wandered to a variety of possibilities.
The negative ultrasound prompted an urgent request for a CT scan, which revealed shocking news. Katie had been prepared for what the doctors were about to tell her. Katie and her boyfriend sat next to each other, waiting for the big announcement.
Definitely Not Pregnant
Katie was not expecting a child. Her large belly was the result of a large ovarian mass. Katie’s entire world came crashing down at this point, as the doctor couldn’t confirm what he was dealing with.
To The Skin
It was a large cyst, measuring 24 centimeters in diameter and attached to her stomach. Her weight gain was finally explained, but her life was still in danger. Immediate action had to be taken.
What Exactly Is An Ovarian Cyst?
A cyst is a fluid-filled sac that can form on the ovary of a woman. They’re very common and usually don’t do any harm, and they’ll go away on their own. Katie, on the other hand, is not one of them.
A cyst can only cause harm to a person’s life if it ruptures, blocks the blood supply to the ovaries, or is enormous, as in this case. Katie’s was huge, no… huge!
Exploring Her Options
Katie spoke with a specialist a month later, who went over the various options available to her. Her mind’s image of the consultant’s face is still fresh. He couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw her belly.
Despite his calm explanation that she had a large ovarian mass, his expression revealed the truth. He was completely taken aback. Even the specialist could not have predicted the cyst’s size.
That’s Not All
The doctor speculated that there could be multiple cysts, some of which could be attached to organs. Katie couldn’t believe it, but she knew surgery was her only option at this point.
Even though they had ruled out all other possibilities, they were still unsure about the cyst’s impact on her body. She had side effects, and they had nothing to do with the fact that she was pregnant.
Even though the doctor had no idea what the cyst was or how big it was, he decided it needed to be treated. He couldn’t believe Katie’s other doctors had all dismissed her with a “you’re fine” response.
One Thing For Certain
Her doctor was certain that she would lose one of her ovaries. Also, depending on the cyst’s location, she may have to stay in the hospital for a longer period of time. Katie felt as if she was signing away her life.
