“Friends” The Movie: Don’t Get Your Hopes Up

Published on 07/25/2019

So no-one told you life was gonna be this waaay… No, really! Just this week, Friends fans were running rampant with excitement after seeing the trailer for the new Friends movie! After 10 years of bringing us all to the point of tears, warm fuzziness, butterflies and then complete despondency, we all thought that Friends was coming back.

We, the true Friends fanatics, have always hoped that there would be another season, another episode… another ANYTHING, we just wanted something! So when the “trailer” for a reunion movie hit the internet, we all went bonkers. When you pray and pray, your prayers are bound to get answered… or at least that’s what we thought. The trailer showed us that the cast of Friends, 14 years later, were coming together for a (really strange) reunion.

The Trailer

We should have all seen the signs when they were there. Firstly Phoebe Buffay has become a doctor (it could happen, I suppose). Then we see Joey Tribbiani in trouble with the law for a DUI, but that kind of resonated with the Joey we all know. A really awkward video chat between Ross and Phoebe which hints at some romantic attraction to one-another. We see Chandler and Monica experiencing some difficulty in their relationship which Monica’s therapist, Rachel, seems to be of some help with. Rachel herself is pregnant again, but with whose child?

The Facts

If you take a closer look at the clips, you’ll notice that you’ve probably seen some of them before. From Courtney Cox’s Cougar Town, Matt LeBlanc’s Joey to Lisa Kudrow’s Web Therapy, none of these are from a new Friends movie. This trend of making trailers for Friends started back in 2013 when a college student made a video for a class project. The trend has continued since, and the most recent one from January 2018 is probably the most believable of the lot.

We Were On A Break

Ross coined it, but the cast are confirming it. Despite our greatest wishes and desires, Friends will not be coming back with a reunion of any sorts in the near future. So where do we go from here? We’ve pulled out all our hair in emotional frustration, are we ready to move on? I guess we’re going to have to continue from where we left off and just keep calm. Unagi.
