The delayed Met Gala finally went ahead in September, and we are still talking about it. That isn’t to say that the event didn’t come with its controversies. The event was met with large crowds of BLM protesters outside and had a vaccine mandate inside. It finally went ahead however on Monday evening, September 13th. Initially cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the event was scheduled again for this year still for coronavirus reasons. The theme of this years Gala was ‘American Independence’. The Met Gala is debatably one of the biggest fashion events in the world nowadays, and it is a fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Arts. We’re sure that you all want to know however, who was there? Of the people there, who stole the show? Read through the article to discover just who was the center of attention at the Gala.
Kim Kardashian
Who else but Kim? If you aren’t living under a rock, there is a high chance you saw Kim’s Met Gala 2021 outfit. Unconventional would be an understatement. She arrived covered from head to toe in a Balenciaga ensemble, leaving no part of her actually identifiable. Kim offered a small explanation, sharing an Instagram post with the caption, ‘What’s more American than a T-shirt head to toe?”. We suppose she is right.
Rihanna & A$AP Rocky
Accompanied by boyfriend A$AP Rocky, Rihanna came to the Gala to play. She was clearly determined to come home with the top crown, and debatably she was the Met Gala queen. Rihanna came in a dramatic black ruffle dress, Balenciaga, accompanied by a beanie and Bulgari diamonds. It was said that the diamonds had carats of over 267! It isn’t so often you see a beanie with diamonds like those, but Rihanna pulled it off well.
Dan Levy
Making his Met Gala debut this year, Levy told Vanity Fair that he was slightly nervous for the event! Levy refers to himself as an introvert, someone who avoids big parties, so for him this was really taking a step out of his comfort zone. Levy wore a powerful ensemble that honored the “resilience and the love and the joy” of the LGBTQ+ community. The look is delicate and very expressive; it features hand embroidery and beading. We are already excited to see what he will wear next year.
Billie Eilish
Billie Eilish was certainly one of the bigger players at the Met Gala this year. She looked transformed and was even one of the gala co-chairs. Known typically for her baggy, comfortable style; she traded this in for an off-shoulder peach tulle gown, made by Oscar de la Renta. Complementing her look was a Marilyn Monroe inspired hairdo. Eilish said that her inspiration was Holiday Barbie. Eilish said that “It’s really body image that tore that s—t down. Why do you think I’ve been dressing the way I have for years?”, citing the fact she used to wear dresses a lot as a kid.
Lil Nas X
Another Met Gala debutant is Lil Nas X. It must be said that he made a stellar debut on the event’s famous steps. The rapper wore a dramatic ensemble, which was custom-designed by Donatella Versace; essentially the equivalent of a Matryoshka doll. Lil Nas X went one step further though, deciding that just one outfit was insufficient. In the end, he wore three outfits to the Gala. The first was an ornate cape, covered in intricate gold beading. Underneath this outfit was a golden suit of armor. At this point the rapper removed another layer, revealing a slinky bodysuit; covered in crystals as well as Versace’s signature house print.
Pharrell Williams
Not the only wearer of a wild-west theme, Pharrell partook in the theme in style. Wearing a Chanel cowboy ensemble, designed by Karl Lagerfield; the outfit was completed with a bolo tie, gold-tipped boots and his wife, who had donned an outfit from the same theme. The combo of Chanel, cowboys and Pharrell Williams is one to certainly be admired, and we are sure that we will remember the outfit for Met Galas to come.
The Met Gala was certainly a success, and we feel mean that we’ve only mentioned the ones we have! Many others were stunning and the event was exciting as ever.
