As Norman pointed out, a rock star’s interest in a woman seemed to decrease once he had captivated her attention. In the first trimester of her pregnancy, Del Santo allegedly informed Norman that one of Clapton’s managers had called her and requested that she kill the pregnancy.

Norman went on to say that throughout those months, the guitar legend was in turmoil and was suffering from depressing feelings. Clapton’s life appeared to be falling apart as he was split between a mistress he detested and a wife who despised him as a result of their relationship. According to reports, the star attempted to put an end to it all by downing an entire bottle of Valium. When he awoke, however, he looked to have had no effect other than the fact that he was completely sober.

As Conor’s due date drew closer, though, Clapton, according to Norman, began to brighten. He even transported Del Santo to London, ostensibly in order to fulfill her request that the child be born in the United Kingdom, according to reports. A cesarean section was performed at St. Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London, later that day, with the rocker present. Del Santo then sent the boy to Italy, where Clapton would pay him a weekly visit until he reached the age of majority.

Clapton’s life altered dramatically after becoming a father, but there were a few things that kept the same throughout the process. He was still an alcoholic, for example, despite the fact that he didn’t drink in front of Conor or around him. When it was actually Clapton’s son who was suffering from “white-knuckle sobriety,” Norman claims that Clapton would immediately hand the boy back to Del Santo – and then he’d supposedly pound the bottle of vodka with both hands.

This practice lasted for more than a year for Clapton, culminating in a tour of Australia in the fall of 1987, when he was at his peak. Clapton’s binge drinking, combined with a demanding work schedule, had reached a breaking point, as he confessed in an interview in which he couldn’t stop trembling. He couldn’t function properly without a drink, but he couldn’t function properly with one. He was in a tight place, and he was barely making ends meet in terms of his musical endeavors. If this trend continues, the entire world will undoubtedly implode.

The incident occurred on one specific day in Australia, when Clapton was holed up in his hotel room with no one else around. He was alone with his thoughts, his pain, and his misery, and he was alone with himself. It was at this point that he knew he needed to return to the hospital and get therapy, not just for himself but also for Conor. He wished to have a healthy relationship with his son, one in which they could bond, rather than one in which he was constantly thinking about when he might have his next alcoholic beverage.

It had a sense of déjà vu in the sense of him returning to combat his alcoholic problems, but in other respects it was completely different from the first go-round. Whereas he might have had some reservations about what had led him there the first time, he was more than aware of what had brought him there this time. He had attempted, but eventually failed, to manage his drinking habits. He required assistance as well as a significant adjustment in his life.

A Different Type Of Counselor

Whereas the last time, counselors appeared to be a little reverent in their treatment of him, this time was different. After first developing a deep bond with the musician, he adopted an unsympathetic approach in the following months. It threw him for a loop, but it ultimately provided him with the tools he needed to be able to see himself as others saw him. It wasn’t attractive, and it prompted Clapton to attempt to stick to the method as best he could.

The first month had passed, and Clapton could sense in himself that he was simply waiting for days to pass, and that he was ultimately gaining nothing from the experience. He had a panic attack one day, at the conclusion of his visit, when he realized that nothing had changed and that he was going to return to the real world, unprepared and in danger. Despite the fact that he had no idea who he was pleading to for rescue, it was the end of his rope for him at that point.

Immediately following his submission to a higher power, he became aware that something had altered within him. No matter if it was a shift in mindset or anything else, he had now discovered a location where he could turn to and feel confident in himself. In the years since, he has never missed a single day of praying, on his knees, every morning and every evening, in order to express thanks for what he has, as well as his sobriety.

Clapton arrived at Lori and Conor’s home in Hurtwood just in time for the holidays after leaving Hazelden. He was well aware that there was a great deal of work to be done in terms of cleaning up some of the devastations he had created; Lori was really supportive throughout the entire process, as was everyone else. Despite the uncertainty surrounding their current situation, she remained patient, and things appeared to be improving for the first time in a long time.

Lunch With Pattie

Clapton had determined that the first person he needed to see was, without a doubt, his ex-girlfriend, Pattie, and so he scheduled a meeting with her. He needed to know whether there was still a glimmer of hope, even if it was just a friendship, after they had broken up on the worst possible circumstances. The two of them got together for lunch and had a terrific time. Clapton had no ill will against him, and the two of them were able to communicate openly and equitably; he was grateful that they had the opportunity to do so.

Work Commitments

Keeping occupied is always a good thing for recovering addicts, and Clapton had to get to work right once on a project that had begun in January 1987 and had to be completed by the end of the year. Eric had promised to perform six gigs at the Royal Albert Hall in London over the course of six consecutive nights. He performed with Nathan East and Greg Phillinganes from the August sessions, as well as Steve Ferrone and Phil Collins on drums and Mark Knopfler on guitar, among other musicians. The performances were so well-received that they became a regular feature.

Bonding With Conor

Clapton’s fondest recollections of those first few years of sobriety were those spent with his son and his mother. It was the closest Eric has ever come to experiencing “normal” He was head over heels in love with Conor, a charming young man with long blond hair and brown eyes. Clapton alluded to old photographs of his Uncle Adrian when he was a child, and he appeared to be an exact match for his nephew Conor. Conor was a curious, lovely, and kind little kid who was walking by the time he was one year old.

Despite his many accomplishments in the music industry, Clapton did not naturally gravitate toward the role of a parent. The truth is that he was just a man-child trying to take care of a baby. Lori took the initiative in the parenting role, and she did an outstanding job. Eric used to sit back and watch Conor because he had no idea what he was doing as a father. He was an exceptionally brilliant boy, and he was adored by every member of his family.

As time went on, Eric grew more at ease in Conor’s company and began to believe that this comfort was reciprocated by the man. He made plans to pay Lori a visit in New York City, where she and her new partner had discussed the possibility of purchasing an apartment. One evening, he picked Conor up and drove him to the circus by himself, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He enjoyed himself on the night out despite being both apprehensive and enthusiastic. Elephants were Conor’s favorite animals and he couldn’t stop himself from talking about them. It was the first time Clapton felt like he was truly grasping the concept of parenting. He was prepared to take the initiative.

A Tragic Morning

Tragically, tragedy struck just as Eric was about to get into the groove of fatherhood. Lori and Conor had agreed to be picked up by Eric, who would then take them to the zoo for lunch. The phone rang at 11 a.m., which was early in the morning. When Lori called, she was in tears, shouting that Conor had passed away. Lori informed Eric that Conor had died after falling out of a window. Eric remained motionless for a moment. He was the first to arrive.

In fact, Eric didn’t even have to enter the room before he realized what had transpired. By just talking to the police and physicians, it was determined that a janitor had temporarily left a window open for cleaning, and that Conor had bolted out the window and plunged to the ground below. Eric was in a trance and found himself taking care of people while he was dazed.

Following the identification of the deceased at the morgue, the duo went to London with the casket in order to bury it in the capital. While the burial was taking place, the Italians sobbed in the background. Clapton remained in a stupor and a state of shock for the rest of the night. This occurred a few days before his 46th birthday, on a chilly and dreary day in the middle of winter. He was in shambles.
